2008/09
After losing to the Cleveland Cavaliers in the Eastern Conference Finals, the Boston Celtics had much more than revenge on their minds. They had another NBA Championship in their collective minds and no one team, not even the Cavaliers were going to take that away from them. Flash forward the 2010 season and the Celtics took a back seat to the Cavaliers all season. The Atlantic Division Champions racked up a 50-32 record but finished in 4th place in the Eastern Conference and had to meet the Miami Heat in the first round of the 2010 NBA Playoffs. After dispatching the Heat in five games, the Celtics then faced their nemeses, the Cleveland Cavaliers in the 2nd round. In a much hyped game, the Celtics easily dispatched of King James and his band of (not so merry) men and moved on to face the Orlando Magic, who took the Celtics out of the playoffs last season.
Game one went to the Celtics, who are playing with home court advantage. While they had an expansive 20-point lead, the Magic worked their… well… magic and got the game to within two points in the final minute of the game. Look for the Magic to rebound but the Celtics are itching for that 18th championship and may be too hard to overcome. Get your tickets to the game and find out how this all plays out.
2007/08
The 2006/07 season proved incredibly disappointing for Boston. The Celtics managed to score the second worst record in the league – a record that included an 18 game losing streak. The failure to execute led the team to be proactive, and as a result, Boston has completely revamped its roster. In fact, The Celtics managed to pull off the blockbuster deal of the year, acquiring Kevin Garnett on July 31st. This has fans in an absolute buzz, as Garnett is an MVP, Olympic Gold Medal winner, and has made the all NBA and All Defensive teams eight times – Not since Larry Bird has Boston seen a player with such a pedigree. Paul Pierce will finally have help holding down the offence – Pierce, Garnett and experienced vet Paul Allen have 22 combined all star appearances between them. As of July, the Celtics were not done making moves. The pressure is on the Celtics for ’07-08.
The Boston Celtics carry one of the most legendary records in sports history. The Celtics dominated the NBA from the years 1957 to 1986, winning an incredible 16 NBA Championships along the way. Celtics history resounds with NBA Hall of Fame players. The list includes over 25 names. Men like Red Auerbach, who coached the Celtics from 1950 to 1966, players like Larry Bird, Bob Cousy, Kevin McHale, and Robert Parish built the Celtics legend with their style, their class, and most of all the ability to win basketball games.
The Celtics legend grew from humble beginnings. In 1946 the Celtics played their first game in Boston Gardens. They were named the Celtics because promoters hoped to gain popularity with the large population of Irish people in Boston. After a few years of struggle, the Celtics locked on to head coach Red Auerbach in 1950 and things began to turn around. Auerbach had the Celtics in the playoffs by 1951 but the team never advances very far until the arrival of Bill Russell in 1956. Russell, fresh of an Olympic appearance, ignited the Celtics with his rebounding and defensive ability. The Celtics won 44 games that year on their way to the playoffs. After winning the Eastern Conference Finals against the Philadelphia Warriors, the Boston Celtics notched their first NBA Championship with a 7 game series against the St. Louis Hawks. It was to be the first of many.
